Adventures in the Past

These are the last of the photos I took on earth day. The museum has more historic buildings than just the farm.

There is an 1890s school house on the grounds. The Concord Schoolhouse was built in the county for children of former slaves.

There is also an old church on the grounds. It was rebuilt in 1937 from parts of the old church and when it was moved to the grounds of the museum it was restored by Florida A&M University as a bicentennial project.
I was very excited about walking through the Bellevue Plantation house but it was closed for painting. I walked over to view it from the outside and take a few pictures. The painters were kind enough to let us in, they just warned us about the areas that were wet.
I would have gotten a full shot but there were painter's tarps on one side.

Bellevue was the home of Catherine Murat, a princess by marriage. I often visit her grave in a downtown cemetery but it was very interesting seeing the house she lived in. It is a modest two story home, the house was kept as close to original as safe to do (a sprinkler system has been added), it is filled with exhibits about daily life on a cotton plantation.

An all time favorite thing of mine to explore is the Seaboard caboose. It is a beautifully restored 1920's caboose with artifacts to examine, you are even free to climb into the cupola but my friend and I opted not to this time.

On your way to the farm you pass the store, it is set up to be like a 1900s general store. It is filled with exhibits of goods you would have seen in a store at that time. When I was younger the building actually was the real store for the museum, I remember saving up my change to buy old fashioned hard candy.

It was such a fun day, I can't wait to go back. The Tallahassee Museum is near and dear to my heart, I went to preschool there. It is a shame I don't go more often, I think I may have to buy a membership soon so I can go whenever I want.

At the Farm

The past couple of days I've been pretty busy. Today my mom, dad, and I all did a Costco trip then we went to our favorite vintage shop, The Other Side. I found a pair of boots that are perfect for a Mad Max styled costume I'm working on and a great captain's hat. No outfit post though, I've been in jeans and band shirts, although I do have more photos from my earth day adventure.

I love the old fashioned farm on the grounds. It is a recreation of a rural north Florida farm from the 1880s. While the buildings were closed the day we went the farm is often bustling with reenactors working in the blacksmith shop, tending the animals, and cooking in the farm kitchen.
The kitchen and the living quarters are in separate buildings.
There is a small garden patch by the house that has seasonal crops.

Next to the garden is the mule pin and the grain mill.
Mules are beautiful animals, but terribly unfriendly.

On the opposite side of the farm are the livestock. The farm has a fat hog, a sassy dairy cow, goats, sheep, chickens, and geese.
This goat is one of the newest members to the farm, he was a little baby only a few months ago.

The cow was being unsocial so she hid in her stall.

The barn shelter is full of antique farming equipment.
We spotted a welcome visitor to the farm, a white squirrel. The Tallahassee Museum is well known for it's population of white squirrels, they are fewer in number then when I was a child but still you almost always spot one on a trip there.
A skink was chilling on a beam of the blacksmith shop. I am not a lizard person so I kept my distance.
The museum often offers blacksmithing courses, someday I hope to take one along with Hubby. We both have keen interest in the craft and I do have it in my blood, my biological father was a blacksmith.

I have one more post worth of pictures. Tune in soon for more of the historic buildings on the grounds.

Dinosaurs

More of my earth day adventure.

I am totally fascinated by dinosaurs. When I was little I was sure I was going to study them when I grew up. One of the newer installations at The Tallahassee Museum are the Jim Gary dinosaurs. The 20th Century Dinosaurs are dispersed around the trails and have plaques that mention parts that are included in each dino. It is so much fun coming around a corner and being face to face with a huge colorful sculpture.
The Apatosaurus is the first dino you see when you enter the grounds. It is a personal favorite of mine, partly because it it bright pink.
My earth day outfit:

Sunnies- Amazon
Earrings- Wild Bryde, secondhand
Shirt: Thrifted
Skirt: Handmade by me
Shoes- Mel by Melissa, secondhand

Overall I think I did well on a earth conscious outfit.

The pteranodons soar over a side of the swamp
The stegosaurus is in the brush looking for tasty plants to nibble
 The dimetrodon knows he's cool
The triceratops shyly peers out from the trees
The allosaurus looks to have found a fossil
The brontosaurus is reaching up for the best tasting leaves

Who's that?
Look who popped up
It's the plesiosaur! This fellow is my ultimate favorite. He does have flippers that you can't see. Once when I was there the lake was dry and you could see the whole sculpture.
I bet he loves this view
The museum also has more Jim Gary sculptures than just the dinos. By the Discovery Center you can find several types of birds, some ants, and even a turtle.

Stay tuned for even more photos of my earth day adventure.
